Most people who've ever bought a train set know OO gauge, and plenty know N. Fewer have heard of TT:120 — and that's understandable, since it's the newest of the three, and by some distance the youngest scale British model railways have seen in over a century.

TT:120 models run at 1:120 scale on 12mm gauge track. That puts it squarely between the two scales most modellers already know: bigger and more detailed than N (1:148), but noticeably more compact than the familiar OO (1:76). A layout that would need a spare room in OO can often fit on a large tabletop, a shelf, or a board that slides under a bed in TT:120 — hence the name, short for "tabletop."

TT:120 as sold in the UK today began with Peco, which quietly released the first British TT:120 track and lineside kits in the summer of 2022. The scale became impossible to ignore a few months later, on 10 October 2022, when Hornby launched a complete TT:120 system.

Wessex Wagons released its first TT:120 wagon, a 7-plank open in the livery of Dunkerton near Bath, in May 2025. It's followed the same approach in the new scale as the old: real regional liveries, small numbered editions, and no attempt to compete with the big manufacturers' mainline locomotives or train sets. The range has grown steadily since, alongside a demonstration layout, "Ridgeway," that the volunteers take to model railway exhibitions across the West Country so people can see the wagons running rather than just sitting in a box.
