South Chord! gets rail

BREAKING NEWS – We have rail on the South Chord! On Sunday
the 6th October a team of volunteers from the engine shed and
Permanent Way teams moved 4 of the lengths of rail that had been
moved over into position on the South Chord. This is a historic
moment, for the first time since the Great Western Railway started
work back in 1864 there is now rail on the South Chord. Thanks to
everyone involved in getting us to this stage.
At this point all major work on the South Chord will have to stop as
we currently have no funds for further work. A major fundraising
campaign will be launched to raise the required funding, £60K.
Funds are required to buy ballast and sleepers, pay for the
construction of the embankment to connect to the current running
line and to construct the new platform and wheelchair accessible
path to the event field. The intention is not to delay work until the
entire sum is raised, there is a schedule of work and as money
becomes available work will progress.
I do not underestimate the challenge of raising such a large sum. A
fundraising strategy has been produced which will be briefed to
members at the Annual General meeting and details will be
published in the next edition of the Turntable. We are going to need
the support of all our members if we are to achieve our goal. Both
with helping with planned events and with making donations. The
South Chord is hugely important to the future of YRC and I know
that we can count on your support. “Team South Chord” needs you!
